EECB Project Objectives

The Energy Efficient Clay Brick (EECB) Project follows a holistic, systematic approach to improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in the South African clay brick sector. Almost every formal clay brick producer in the country has been approached and advised on energy saving opportunities. Over the lifespan of the project, CO2 emissions in the clay brick sector have been reduced by 380,000 tCO2 annually.

The EECB Project goes beyond technology interventions at individual brick-makers - it targets the entire “ecosystem” of the clay brick sector. Thus, it operates in a dynamic environment that includes a diverse set of stakeholders.

Stakeholder 1: Producers

The EECB facilitated change through direct engagement and interventions with clay brick producers and their suppliers to shift to more energy efficient production practices.

Stakeholder 2: Public Sector

The EECB engaged with financial institutions to improve access to financing/incentive schemes for cleaner technology. It facilitated networking between private and public sector stakeholders to regulate and set standards that will result in a more sustainable and energy efficient clay brick sector.

Stakeholder 3: Consumers

Finally, the Project engaged with customers and specifiers to raise the awareness on energy efficiency improvements in the clay brick sector, as knowledgeable and committed buyers are key drivers of change.

The EECB facilitated on-site case studies at respected local brickworks, that harness technological innovations and best practice. Through this “hands-on” approach the project was able to demonstrate that is feasible to be both environmentally friendly and economically sustainable in both small and large operations.
